The Rock wrestled in a shirt? He sure did!
When wrestling fans think of The Rock (real name Dwayne Johnson) they think of all the success he had in a WWE ring and then his movie career. If you’re not a WWE fan then maybe you think of the movie career first because you don’t know too much about what he did in WWE. Those of us that watched him start in the mid 1990s and then become this sensation within a few years will never forget what he did in WWE.
He started in WWE in late 1996 with the company portraying him as this huge babyface star. They mentioned that he was a former football player that was the son of Rocky Johnson and grandson of “High Chief” Peter Maivia. Fans were receptive to him early on, but then they quickly booed him and chanted “Rocky Sucks” at him. As it turned out, that was the best thing for him.
Once he turned heel he became “The Rock” and his career took off. He was a part of the Nation of Domination, then he became the leader, then he won the IC Title and then he was part of a huge screwjob finish at Survivor Series 1998 that led to him joining Vince & Shane McMahon to become WWE Champion just two years after his WWE debut. He headlined WrestleMania 15 in 1999 when he was just 26 years old. A true blue chipper if there ever was one.
As great as Rock’s career has been, he was gone from WWE as a regular in 2003. He did wrestle at WrestleMania 20 in 2004 and made some brief appearances after that, but it wasn’t until his 2011 that he felt like a WWE guy again. If he was competing in WWE regularly during those years he’d be an even bigger wrestling star than he already is. Nobody blames him for leaving, though. He got paid more to be an actor. It’s a more glamorous job. More power to him.
He is one of the most famous people alive and in 2013 became the biggest box office attraction in the world. He’s also a guy that has things that WWE wants us to forget about him. It was actually tough to come up with this because he’s such a well spoken and clean cut guy that there’s not a lot of “dirt” on him. While I would consider myself a huge Rock fan, there are always things that are worth talking about in a wrestler’s past.
With his new movie Hercules out this week, here are 10 things that WWE wants you to forget about The Rock.
