10 Depressing WWE Career Free Falls 5

5. Alberto Del Rio

Not many wrestlers over the past decade received the type of push that Alberto Del Rio got right out of the gate. Yes, he was basically cast as the modern day Million Dollar man, but he was believable in the role. WWE went all in on him early on by having him defeat Rey Mysterio cleanly his first night in (back when that actually meant something). He was also given expensive cars to drive in every week, plenty of promo time and even his own ring announcer.
Del Rio’s Peak: At Royal Rumble 2011, Del Rio won the biggest Rumble in the company’s history. Sure, it wasn’t the most loaded Rumble ever, but he was set for a key role at WrestleMania 27. At least he should have been…
Where he is Now: At Mania 27, Del Rio fought Edge in the opening match for the World Heavyweight Title, and he lost! His momentum was badly damaged, even though he did cash in his Money in the Bank contract on CM Punk a few months later. He quickly lost the WWE title to John Cena, and subsequently came out on the losing side of feuds with Randy Orton and Sheamus. Del Rio must be going through some tough financial times as his cars are gone, his announcer is gone, and his tan is gone. The poor man can’t afford 20 minutes in the tanning booth!
Chance of a Comeback: 10%. Del Rio is still used in fairly big matches on occasion, but nobody takes him seriously anymore. He’s a mid-card heel who fights in mid-card matches with mid-card opponents. There have been rumors in the past of him being frustrated with his push, so perhaps he’ll just quit before ever receiving another shot.
