10 WWE Stars Who Made Amazing Recoveries From Drug Addiction 2

2. William Regal

A lot of wrestlers had noticeable problems for years until they got help.  William Regal wasn’t necessarily one of them until a 1997 arrest for accidentally urinating on a flight attendant while intoxicated during a trip back home from a tour of Japan.  He was semi-conscious in the restroom, left the door open, turned around when flight attendant went over to check what was going on, and you can figure out the rest.
Still, WCW, being WCW, did nothing.  Regal wasn’t fired until much later, and it had nothing to do with the arrest or his issues with substance abuse.  With friends like Steve Austin and Triple H as top stars in the WWF, he was able to get a job easily, but he didn’t last long since he had become unable to hide his problems, especially once he began abusing GHB, which caused him more problems than any other drug.
During his initial meeting with Vince McMahon and Jim Ross, he actually fell asleep.  McMahon thought it was due to the unrelated illness Regal had been dealing with, though Ross told people it was among his most embarrassing moments in the business.
Regardless, it wasn’t long until they sent him to rehab.  After initially relapsing while on a day pass away from the facility and getting fired, he said an awakening of some kind while in a hospital bed.  He thrived in treatment from that point on and has been clean of alcohol and intoxicating drugs for over 15 years.
All of this is covered much more in-depth in Regal’s book, which is a must-read.
