5. Eddy Guerrero
This is a tricky one. Not only was he incredibly yoked up on who knows what physique builders at the time of his death, but he was even taking painkillers for his completely thrashed back, albeit in a supervised capacity. Having said that, Eddy Guerrero post-rehab is a very different person from Eddy Guerrero pre-rehab.
By all accounts, when he wasn’t drinking, Eddy was pretty much the nicest person ever to walk the face of the planet, having long talks with WWE staffers he didn’t know well if they seemed depressed and even giving his cell phone number to kids who he met through charities like the Make-A-Wish Foundations. Drunk, he was volatile and eager to get in fights, and high he was just kind of pathetic.
In 2001, his friends realized they shouldn’t “hide” him while he was wasted at a TV taping, told Jim Ross, and Eddy went to rehab. He did well while in treatment, but relapsed soon after he got out, got arrested for a DUI, and WWE fired him. He cleaned up so dramatically and so quickly while working independent and overseas dates that he was hired back within months, was given the Intercontinental Title immediately, and was set to feud with Steve Austin when Austin walked out on the company.
He still soldiered on, became a bigger star than ever expected, and was WWE’s best all-around performer…when he died. He did way too much damage on the way and trying to get big.
