6. Chris Jericho
Jericho came to the WWF as a great wrestler with potential that had been largely untapped by World Championship Wrestling. Eager to prove his worth, Jericho again established his in-ring skill, but its in his character development in the WWF where Jericho truly developed into a superstar. In WCW Jericho was arguably aimless, a charismatic lightning bolt striking down hither and fro without being harnessed for maximum effect. From Jericho’s promo debut with The Rock to his promo work with the likes of The Undertaker, Big Show and numerous other starts, the level of effort WWF creative exerted upon his character’s carefully cultivated interaction with the roster allowed for Jericho’s true star power to become apparent.
From being a co-Intercontinental Champion with Chyna to being the first Undisputed Champion, teaming with Christian, feuding with Shawn Michaels, and adopting two different types of self-righteous characters, Jericho’s on-again/off-again 15-year relationship with World Wrestling Entertainment has as much been about great wrestling as it has been about great moments in character development. Intriguingly, as Jericho has aged, his ability to execute moments of gravitas like punching Shawn Michaels’ wife in the face or questioning the honest intentions of CM Punk’s straight edge lifestyle that have allowed him to be compelling, as though his wrestling talent has not waned, he’s certainly able to draw money through more acting-driven, yet still compelling means.
