5. Raven’s Masterpiece
Raven was arguably the Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts of the 1990′s, with one of the coolest and sinister characters in professional wrestling. Much like Roberts, he had a fantastic mind for the wrestling business and came up with a grand storyline involving his character and the seven deadly sins.
In 2002, Raven was engaged in another feud with Tommy Dreamer when Dreamer defeated him in a match where the loser was no longer allowed on Monday Night Raw. Stuck on Sunday Night Heat, Raven turned the place into his playground and in a storyline reminiscent to the film Se7en, announced his masterpiece.
He terrorized other members of the Heat roster, breaking people’s fingers and generally wrecking havoc. Two sins in, he was approached by the then-corporate stooge Chief Morley (Val Venis) and told that if he dropped the masterpiece and beat Tommy Dreamer that night, he would be allowed back on Raw. He accepted, beat Dreamer and got back on Raw where he lost a Royal Rumble qualifying match to Jeff Hardy and was dropped from the roster a few weeks later.
In reality, the WWE offices reportedly thought that the angle wasn’t getting over and axed it quickly. Unfortunately for Raven, we will never know what the culmination of his masterpiece was, mainly due to creative’s lack of support for Raven and his idea. We think its a shame as Raven was always one of the more intriguing characters in wrestling and the masterpiece storyline was actually starting to make Sunday Night Heat interesting again. Oh well.
