1. His Excessive Chair Shots To Mick Foley’s Head At Royal Rumble 1999
It’s one of the most vicious beatings in the history of WWE and something that The Rock regrets very much. During his WWE Title “I Quit” match with Mick Foley (as Mankind) at the 1999 Royal Rumble they ended it in a scary way as the heel Rock handcuffed Foley’s hands behind his back. Then Rock grabbed a steel chair.
Rock hit Foley in the head with a chair shot. With Foley on his knees, Rock hit him again. He got back up, so Rock hit him three more times. Foley’s head was bleeding. They went outside the ring as Rock hit him for the sixth time. Rock hit him again for the seventh time. As they stood in the aisle, Rock hit him an eighth time and then again. With Foley stumbling forward, Rock hit him in the back of the head for a tenth and final time. Rock ended up winning the WWE Title cheaply after a recording of Foley saying “I Quit” played on the arena speakers.
In Foley’s books he talked about how he didn’t appreciate Rock going overboard with the chair shots, but Rock told him he got caught up in the moment. It was a young guy (Rock) making a mistake. Foley also mentioned that it took a while for Rock to apologize for it. Eventually he did. He learned from it.
The reason WWE wants us to forget about it is because in today’s PG environment there is absolutely no way (and The Rock means no way) that this would ever be replayed or repeated in WWE. There are no more chair shots to the head. There probably never will be again, much less 10 of them in the same match.
That’s it for this week’s things WWE wants us to forget series. Who do you want to see next? Here’s a list of who I’ve written about so far: Undertaker, Kane, Vince McMahon, Triple H, Hulk Hogan, John Cena, Randy Orton, Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, Ultimate Warrior, Steve Austin, Batista, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Daniel Bryan, Edge, Scott Hall, Edge, Stephanie McMahon, Rob Van Dam, Trish Stratus, Goldust and Lita. Who do you want to see next?
