9. Evan Bourne
In many ways, Evan Bourne and Ezekiel Jackson’s last few months with the WWE are very similar. They were both released in 2014 after horrific spells out with injuries, but the release of Bourne came as much more of a surprise earlier this year.
When he burst onto the scene he immediately found his place on the WWE roster. He was quickly thrust into matches against the likes of then-WWE Champion Sheamus, which perhaps best illustrated just how highly he was regarded by those backstage. He had a real in-ring presence too; wrestling fans are a real sucker for a daredevil high-flier, and that’s exactly what Evan Bourne is when he enters a wrestling ring. That’s why a tag team with Kofi Kingston was another smart move, and it was rewarded with a reign as tag champions in 2011. Two midcard guys coming together to inject some enthusiasm in the tag division was exactly what was required (and is a move that is often explored by the WWE) – and it paid off big style.
Unfortunately for Bourne, two suspensions for violating the WWE’s Wellness Policy put several nails in his coffin, before a lengthy lay-off confirmed that his future would lie away from the WWE. Clearly his track record with the Wellness Policy isn’t great, but there are plenty of other stars who have done exactly the same. So why not give Bourne another chance?
