6. Brian Kendrick
In the mid-2000s, Paul London and Brian Kendrick were probably more renowned for their in-ring competition alongside each other, rather than as singles stars. Their record-breaking reign as WWE Tag Team Champions (331 days, longer than any other team who have held the belts) was a sterling effort, and showed that both London and Kendrick had plenty to offer the WWE.
However, it is his run as The Brian Kendrick (a nice little gimmick that the WWE failed to fully exploit) which perhaps sticks more firmly in the memory. That gimmick saw him get a pretty substantial push by the company as a major heel – with some interesting results. Hell, he was that highly thought of that he was put into a Championship Scramble match for the WWE Championship at Unforgiven 2008 – he didn’t win, but he had the longest run as “interim” champion throughout that match. Clearly The Brian Kendrick was going places – but then the WWE applied the breaks rather sharply.
He went on a real dismal run of form, forming several tag teams with partners he had no real right to be teaming with. A slow, gradual run towards his eventual release became more and more evident by the week, and it was a real shame to see Kendrick’s unique gimmick ultimately fail. Spells in TNA and New Japan Pro Wrestling have followed since his release – but that gimmick has unfinished business in the WWE. Time for the WWE to give Kendrick another shot.
