9. Vickie Guerrero
From being a linchpin in the storyline involving Eddie Guerrero claiming that he was the actual father of Rey Mysterio’s son Dominic to being a heat machine as Smackdown’s General Manager, Vickie Guerrero is one of the least likely WWE stars of all time.
Regularly appearing as a character in WWE storylines eight months after her husband’s passing in 2005, the idea that Vickie Guerrero would be any other character than a babyfaced grieving spouse seemed strange. However, never one to not strike for the jugular out of the gate, VInce McMahon and WWE creative aligned VIckie with Edge in of all things, a romantic storyline.
Vickie as the put upon Smackdown General Manager “married” to conniving opportunist Edge was absolutely meant to be off-putting. Edge is a heel and thus must do dastardly things. This was a dastardly thing that struck rather close to home for fans who adored Eddie Guerrero, and, it worked. VIckie’s comfort in the role only grew, and eventually booing Vickie (instead of feeling bad for her) became the norm.
In some strange way, Vickie’s growing comfort in the world of pro wrestling over her nine year World Wrestling Entertainment career has possibly aided in fans being able to deal with the loss of Eddie Guerrero. Though always missed, his WWE legacy of being a performer willing to literally do anything to give the people their money’s worth in entertainment is carried on through Vickie’s in-ring work. From every shrill “Excuse me!” to the not-so-technically sound times she wrestled, and so many more, she’s certainly developed over time in a most surprising way.
